October 9 Program Brings Tastes, Flavors of Caribbean to Mount Prospect Public Library

The Library welcomes Chef David Esau, of Dave’s Specialty Foods, for a program that will present best techniques for cooking and serving Caribbean food Tuesday, October 9, 7 p.m.

During this cooking demonstration – part of the Library’s month-long “Passport to the Caribbean Islands” cultural program – Chef Esau will prepare Jerk Chicken, Jamaican Rice and Peas, and Mango Tart.  Guests will enjoy samples and take home recipes, all included with the program’s $4 registration fee.

Chocolate Mania: Breakfast at the Chocolate Works

Mount Prospect will be attracting cocoa fiends in September for their new "Chocolate Mania" celebration at the Library.

Kick off the celebration with Crazy for Chocolate at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 25. Pastry Chef Rose Deneen from the Test Kitchen of Wilton Industries will demonstrate how to make all things chocolate...from chocolate-dipped strawberries, pretzels, and marshmallows to chocolate truffles and molded chocolates.

This program will pique your interest for the big fundraising event which will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at the Library.

Surrender to your sweet tooth early at Breakfast at the Chocolate Works, designed for children and adults alike. Only 80 tickets will be sold, and registration will close when that limit is reached or no later than 5 p.m., September 27. Register online or call 847/253-5675.

An Afternoon With Barbara Rinella

On Monday, October 1 at 1 p.m. the Mount Prospect Public Library Foundation welcomes academic entertainer Barbara Rinella for an enlightening presentation focusing on the lessons contained in author/screenwriter/director Nora Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts On Being a Woman. Rinella will bring to life Ephron's humorous observations on everything from aging and marriage to parenting and iceberg lettuce.

     Tickets are $15 through September 30 and $18 at the door. Proceeds will help support the Foundation's sponsorship of Library programming and community outreach activities. Register online or call 847/253-5675.

Chess for All Ages (October 7)

Test your skills during an afternoon of open play chess Sunday, October 7, 2 – 4 p.m.  The Library welcomes players of all skill levels, from novice to master, and will provide chessboards and refreshments.  An adult must accompany children under age nine.  Register online or call 847/253-5675.

Terrific Tunes for Teachers - (November 3)

Susan Salidor, an award-winning children’s musician, leads a workshop for early childhood educators and childcare providers Saturday, November 3, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.  This workshop will present a variety of ways for educators to use songs, musical finger plays, and other activities with young children.  This program, cosponsored by the Children’s Home and Aid Society of Illinois, is worth two hours toward the annual childcare providers’ education requirement.  Register online or call 847/253-5675.

Vote for the Book of the Year – The Quill Awards

Cast your vote by October 10, 2007 and see the winners on NBC, Saturday October 27, 2007.


The Quill Awards are given annually to honor the most entertaining and enlightening books of the year; they celebrate the best adult and children's books in 19 popular categories, ranging in everything from biography to general fiction to cookbooks and graphic novels. 


To determine the 2007 nominees, a distinguished panel of experts reviewed and selected the top 5 books in each of 19 categories.  Then, over the course of the summer, the Quill’s Voting Board, comprised of over 6,000 invited booksellers and librarians, voted for the 19 category winners.  Now it is up to you, the voting public, to select the top book for 2007, by reviewing the 19 category nominees and picking your favorite.  You have until October 10 to vote.  The winner will receive their award at the nationally televised Quill Awards ceremony, October 27, on NBC.
