"Peace" Sculpture Celebrated in Mount Prospect

On March 10, 2007, the Mount Prospect Public Library held a ceremony to honor Mrs. Elizabeth J. Clough, a woman who, 10 years ago, donated half of her estate to the Mount Prospect Public Library.  In recognition of her generosity, the Library used a portion of this donation to install a 12-foot bronze and stainless steel sculpture entitled “Peace” on the corner of Emerson Street and Central Road.  In his dedication, Reverend Dr. Daniel Swinson noted that Mrs. Clough’s peaceful life well lived served as an example for all of us.

For Teen Librarian Rose Allen, “the sculpture embodies all that the Library is and should be to the community of Mount Prospect.  There are mornings when my heart is so heavy, but when I approach the intersection of Central and Elmhurst and see the "Peace” sculpture perched atop the books with the doves lifting their wings to the heavens, I am reminded of the unconditional love that my Mom had for me.  Seeing the sculpture glistening in the morning sun makes me feel I can begin my day with a renewed spirit.”

Over 50 people attended the ceremony including State Senators Susan Garrett and Dan Kotowski, Representative Elaine Nekritz and the sculptor, Erik Blome.  Library Trustees Jane Everett and Jacqueline Hinaber shared their thoughts and spoke about the additional art donations that have been made to the library.  The library is proud to showcase several fine art pieces and invites the community to come and enjoy the various works throughout the library.

MPPL dedicates "Peace" sculpture

The “Peace” sculpture, which recently made its journey to the Peace Garden of the Mount Prospect Library located at the corner of Emerson Street and Central Road, will be dedicated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 10.

This sculpture, paid for by the Elizabeth J. Clough Fund, honors Mrs. Clough, a longtime Mount Prospect Resident and philanthropist whose bequest in the early ‘90s has allowed the Mount Prospect Public Library to sponsor many programs, including the annual cultural heritage month. “We are thrilled to be able to recognize Elizabeth J. Clough in this way.  Her bequest has truly made a lasting impact on the entire Mount Prospect community,” noted Marilyn Genther, Executive Director of the Mount Prospect Public Library.

The artist, Erik Blome, heralds from Crystal Lake and has produced sculptures for many public projects including a statue of Mrs. Rosa Parks on display at the Rosa Parks Museum and Library in Montgomery, Alabama, an 8 ft. tall statue of Jack Benny for the City of Waukegan, and the Chicago Blackhawks 75th Commemorative Sculpture at the United Center in Chicago.

Both the artist, Erik Blome, and Reverend Dr. Daniel Swinson of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Mount Prospect will be speaking. The Mount Prospect Public Library invites the entire community to the dedication and the reception immediately following.
